Social media erupts as Trump ‘mocks’ young girl for being short and ruins her volleyball dreams

Donald Trump is drawing attention after a brief exchange in the Oval Office. As he announced the revival of the Presidential Fitness Test at the White House, several children were present. However, a video of Trump commenting on a young girl’s height and her volleyball ambitions is now spreading for all the wrong reasons.

The moment took place during a White House event on Wednesday, May 5. President Donald Trump announced the return of the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, a school fitness program. As it was introduced, children and athletes were present both in the Oval Office and on the White House grounds.

During the event, he spoke with a young girl about her sports goals. However, the brief conversation has since sparked wider online discussion about how he addressed the child’s athletic aspirations.

The exchange began when Trump asked the young girl what sport she played, and later asked about her height as she responded.

“I play volleyball, and then in the summer I’m trying to get into soccer,” the girl said.

Trump then asked, “And with your height, do you smash the ball, the volleyball. Do you get up high? Can you jump high?”

The girl answered, “Not very,” to which Trump replied, “Soccer might be better.”

He then said, “I’m just looking, I think she’d be a great soccer player,” and continued, “That’s good. Good luck, OK?”

Donald Trump’s conversation with young girl in the Oval Office sparks social media outrage

It did not take long for the video to go viral on social media, with many questioning the president’s conversation with the young girl.

“Bullying a child to score cheap laughs, this is who he is. Petty, insecure, and completely unfit for any position of leadership. Kids deserve encouragement, not humiliation from a grown man,” one wrote.

Another added, “This feels like one of those moments where the words themselves are simple, but the way it comes across makes all the difference—especially when it’s directed at a kid.”

“Why do parents let him near their children?” a third asked.

A fourth wrote, “The way my heart actually broke for her… kids should be told they can do anything, not that they’re ‘too short’ for their dreams. Literally so unnecessary.”

Defended by supporters

On the other hand, Trump’s supporters saw the remark as harmless advice.

“Trump was just being honest and helpful, not mocking. Height matters in volleyball, better to guide her to what suits her strengths like soccer. Dreams need reality too!” one social media user stated.

A second wrote, “He helped the girl. Whether you like it or not, humans are raised via programming. You need to ingrain what you think is the right thing into your child! To maintain individuality and freedom, you inject principles and high expectations without being too specific.”

“Trump agreed and gave better options. You clowns want him to gaslight children now? Pathetic,” a third added.
