Former teenage heartthrob walked away from Hollywood to focus on family

Young stars in Hollywood often seem to have it all—fame, money, and good looks. People tend to idealize their lives, as if everything comes easily to them. So when a teen star decides to walk away from it all, it always comes as a surprise.

The story we have for you today follows a similar path. A young Hollywood actor, adored by millions of women around the world, decided there was more to life than the silver screen.

He famously appeared as a child actor on “Growing Pains,” and from there, he became one of the most popular actors of the 1980s. He was a regular on the covers of teen magazines. While it looked like he had everything, he was struggling with the reality of being a young star in Hollywood—and to him, it wasn’t all that appealing.

Young Kirk Cameron never planned to become an actor. In fact, he wanted to be a doctor. His dream was to become a surgeon, but his life took a completely different turn when his mother, encouraged by a friend, introduced her young son to acting.

His sister, Candace Cameron Bure, is also an actress who started acting as a child. She is best known for her role in Full House. The friend who encouraged his mother was actually fellow child star Adam Rich’s mother. Rich was widely known for his role in Eight Is Enough.

She suggested her friend take her son to agents and try their luck with commercials. His mother reluctantly followed the advice, but it worked out well, as Cameron soon started landing small roles. One of his first acting jobs was a commercial for McDonald’s. While Cameron didn’t enjoy acting, he kept getting offers.

“I was always annoyed having to brush my hair and tuck my shirt in to go drive an hour in traffic to audition,” he later revealed about his early days of fame. Even though he wasn’t enthusiastic about acting, he soon landed his role as Mike Seaver in Growing Pains, and the rest was history.

But internally, he struggled with whether Hollywood was really where he belonged. Then something else began to call to him—his faith.

Growing up, his family wasn’t religious. The actor said, “When I was growing up, we didn’t go to church.”

“If you had asked me, I would have said I would be in the category of an atheist at 16 years old, 17 years old,” he later revealed. “I think I caught my atheism—it was by contagion,” he shared, referring to teachers who taught science and other subjects and viewed religion as “just a fairy tale.”

A chance encounter made the young actor reconsider his relationship with faith.

He met a girl he liked, and she asked him to attend church with her and her family.

“I’ll be honest. It wasn’t because I was interested in God. I was interested in the girl,” he later admitted.

However, that church visit changed his life, and even his friends in Hollywood noticed the difference.

At 17, his real-life experience with faith began to influence how he approached his role on Growing Pains. The show’s producers and his co-stars noticed the shift. They worried that his newfound devotion might affect the show and its future.

“Is he getting into something that’s really gonna take him into Looney Town? And if it is, we need to stop that,” he later recalled people saying at the time.

“I was trying to take the moral high road. I wanted to please God genuinely, and I think sometimes that got misunderstood,” he says now.

His priorities had changed, and people around him were concerned. Slowly, he began to dislike his life in Hollywood. The actor later said, “The evil, the darkness, the twisted sickness of Hollywood has been going on for a long time.”

His personal dialogue coach from the show, Brian Peck, was later highlighted for his role in the abuse faced by young child stars in the industry. He was heavily featured as a perpetrator in a recent documentary uncovering those crimes.

All of this reinforced Cameron’s belief that Hollywood was driven by power, pride, and ego. These realizations ultimately led him to step away from his promising acting career.

He became more devoted to his faith, believing it would protect him.

“When that becomes your God, rather than the God who laid down His life on a cross 2,000 years ago, you’re in for a world of hurt,” he shared.

He was only 20 when he married his “Growing Pains” co-star Chelsea Noble. Cameron had officially left Hollywood behind, and the two began building their life together.

The couple have six children, four of whom are adopted. Adoption is something both he and his wife care deeply about, especially since she herself was adopted. They made sure their adopted children knew about their backgrounds and helped them reconnect with their biological families when they were old enough to understand.

In 2021, Cameron revealed that he wanted to leave not just Hollywood, but California as well. He shared his decision on social media.

“I asked on social media what states people recommend for a Californian looking to relocate, and the top responses were Tennessee, Florida, and Texas,” he posted on Facebook.

Cameron explained that he felt California had become increasingly unsafe and that he wanted a place with more “wholesome values.”

He eventually moved to Tennessee because three of his children already lived there. It gave the family the chance to be closer together. They also enjoyed the slower pace of life Tennessee offered. He appreciated the “healthy freedom mindset” there—something he felt no longer existed in California. He also believed Tennessee was a “hub for Christian projects.”

Being closer to family became even more meaningful when he became a grandfather in the summer of 2024. He shared the news of his granddaughter, Maya Jeanne Noble Bower, on social media.

“Our hearts are filled to overflowing,” he wrote. “Our beautiful baby girl just had a beautiful baby girl, and we can hardly wait to spend every minute with her and shower her with love.”

Alongside his new role as a grandfather, Cameron also continued acting. In 2022, he released his film Lifemark, which highlighted the beauty of life and adoption. The project was especially meaningful to him, as four of his own children are adopted and his wife was adopted as well.

It is heartwarming to see Kirk Cameron fulfilling his passions both personally and professionally. Share this with other fans of the actor so they can see what he has been up to!
