Hollywood is mourning the loss of actor Michael Pennington, who has died at the age of 82. His representatives have confirmed the news, and tributes are now being shared widely.
The British actor was best known to film audiences for his role as Imperial officer Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, where he oversaw the construction of the second Death Star.
Born in Cambridge, England, on June 7, 1943, Pennington went on to become one of Britain’s most highly regarded Shakespearean performers. In 1986, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company with director Michael Bogdanov, dedicating much of his career to theatre and classical drama.
His death was confirmed on Sunday, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans worldwide. Actress Miriam Margolyes remembered him as a “very fine actor, brilliant, wise, clear.”
According to the BBC, she also said he was “an old friend, from Cambridge [University] days,” adding: “I am sad beyond measure. Bless your dear memory, old chum.”
Although many people recognized him for his role in the Star Wars franchise, Pennington had a long and distinguished career across stage and screen. His film credits included Hamlet and The Iron Lady, in which he portrayed British politician Michael Foot.
He also worked closely with Dame Judi Dench and her husband Michael Williams, appearing alongside them in several stage productions, including King Lear.
Some years ago, Pennington revealed that watching Dench play Ophelia in a 1957 production of Hamlet inspired him to pursue acting.
“There’s no one quite like Judi. For her acting is playing: she’s a lass unparalleled,” he once said.
Despite achieving global recognition through Star Wars, Pennington admitted he was often surprised by how strongly the role followed him, with fans frequently bringing it up after theatre performances.
His final credited role came in 2022, when he voiced The Trust in five episodes of the sci-fi series Raised by Wolves. He is survived by his son, Mark.
Rest in peace, Michael Pennington.
