Legendary singer Bonnie Tyler reportedly suffered cardiac arrest as doctors tried to bring her out of an induced coma following life-saving surgery for a burst appendix. Now, the Total Eclipse of the Heart singer’s friend has shared a worrying update.
Bonnie Tyler’s health condition worsened late last week after she underwent life-saving surgery for a burst appendix.
Earlier this week, a spokesman for the singer said Tyler, 74, was “recuperating well,” and a quick recovery seemed possible. However, her condition later deteriorated, and she was placed in an induced coma, according to several news outlets.
A statement from Bonnie Tyler’s spokesperson read, “Thank you for the incredible outpouring of love and well wishes we’ve received for Bonnie over the last few days. It truly means the world.”
“Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery,” it continued. “We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time, please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”
According to respected Portuguese daily Correio da Manhã, which the Mirror cited, doctors tried to bring Bonnie Tyler out of an induced coma at a hospital in Algarve, Portugal, after she became unwell following the life-saving surgery for a burst appendix. It was later reported that this was when she suffered cardiac arrest.
Bonnie Tyler’s friend issues gut-wrenching update
The paper further reported that the Total Eclipse of the Heart star is expected to remain in the induced coma in the intensive care unit at Faro Hospital until doctors can control the “serious infection” she developed following the burst appendix.
Now, a friend of Bonnie Tyler has spoken out, sharing a worrying update on the 74-year-old Welsh star. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, longtime friend Liberto Mealha said they are hoping she improves as soon as possible.
“I could not see her because she’s in intensive care, but we are praying for better news. The doctors are positive with the situation, but so far it’s not that good,” Liberto Mealha, whose daughter counts Bonnie Tyler as her godmother, said.
Bonnie Tyler has long divided her time between Faro, Portugal, and her home in South Wales. In recent years, she has dealt with several health issues.
Spoke about health issues
She told Hello! Magazine that her main health issue has been her knees.
“I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,” Bonnie Tyler said. “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything. I do home Pilates, only 20 minutes a day — it’s something I can do in my hotel rooms.”
“I have had problems with my knees; I didn’t have new knees, I had what they call washouts [a surgical knee procedure], which turned out to be very successful. So, hopefully that will last for a long time,” she continued.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bonnie Tyler and her loved ones.
