Researchers uncover an unexpected effect of frequent masturbation

Researchers may have identified a surprising side effect of regular self‑pleasure — and for anyone concerned about sperm health, the findings are actually encouraging.

From diet hacks to timing intercourse “perfectly,” theories about boosting fertility have circulated for years. And when it comes to masturbation, one question keeps resurfacing: how often is too often?

In recent years, the trend “No Nut November” has gained global attention, based on the belief that abstaining from ejaculation might improve sperm quality or testosterone levels. Doctors, however, have repeatedly said there’s no evidence for that. In fact, Medical News Today notes that long periods without ejaculation may even contribute to anxiety or low mood.

A new review from the University of Oxford — analyzing 115 studies and nearly 55,000 men — adds more clarity. According to UNILAD, the researchers found that longer gaps between ejaculations were linked to poorer sperm health overall. Key measures such as motility (how well sperm move) and viability (how many are alive) declined the longer sperm remained stored. At the same time, DNA damage increased. In simple terms: sperm that sit around too long may begin to deteriorate.

Benefits of regular masturbation

More frequent ejaculation, including through masturbation, may help “refresh” the sperm supply by clearing out older, potentially damaged cells.

Previous research has also pointed to benefits. A Harvard study found that men who ejaculated 21 times or more per month had a 31% lower risk of prostate cancer. According to UNILAD, the study noted that the results held up even after accounting for lifestyle factors and PSA testing frequency.

The Oxford review suggests a couple of possible explanations. One is oxidative stress, which can build up over time and damage cells. Another is energy depletion: sperm are highly active, and when stored for too long, they may simply lose the energy needed to function properly.
