Pam Bondi was removed from her position as attorney general by Donald Trump. Todd Blanche stepped in as acting attorney general, and he has now spoken publicly for the first time about her dismissal — offering a remark that has quickly drawn attention.
Bondi had long been one of Trump’s most vocal allies and defenders throughout his second presidential term. But last week, she was abruptly fired from her role.
Trump announced the decision on Truth Social, choosing to highlight her accomplishments rather than the reasons behind her departure.
“Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year. Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900,” Trump wrote.
He added, “We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much‑needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future, and our Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General.”
So why did Trump fire Bondi? Sources who spoke with CNN said he had several concerns. He was unhappy with her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and felt she had not aggressively pursued enough of his political opponents. She is the second Cabinet official removed in recent weeks, following Kirsti Noem.
Pam Bondi fired as attorney general by Donald Trump In the days leading up to her dismissal, Trump reportedly discussed the possibility with close allies and even confronted Bondi directly last Wednesday, according to CNN.
One source described the conversation as “tough.” Trump allegedly made it clear that her time in the position was nearing an end and that he intended to replace her soon.
Shortly after being fired, Bondi issued a public statement. On social media, she thanked Trump for the opportunity to serve and praised what she described as a historic first year for the Department of Justice.
“Over the next month, I will be working tirelessly to transition the office of Attorney General to the amazing Todd Blanche before moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration,” she wrote on X.
She continued, “Leading President Trump’s historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honor of a lifetime, and easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history. Since February 2025, we have secured the lowest murder rate in 125 years, secured first‑ever terrorism convictions against members of Antifa, shattered domestic and transnational gangs across the country, taken custody of more than 90 key cartel figures, and won 24 favorable rulings at the Supreme Court.”
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche says “nobody has any idea” why Trump fired Bondi Bondi concluded, “I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again.”
Todd Blanche, now serving as acting attorney general, has addressed Bondi’s firing — but says he does not know the reason behind it.
He also told reporters during a Tuesday press conference at Justice Department headquarters that he has no intention of trying to find out.
“Nobody has any idea why the attorney general is no longer the attorney general and I’m the acting attorney general, except for President Trump,” Blanche said, according to The New York Times, adding that he has not drawn any lessons from her removal.
He continued, “I don’t operate every day trying to second‑guess what President Trump or anybody else is thinking. I just operate every day on doing everything that I need to do to execute the president’s agenda and priorities.”
Blanche concluded, “I grow tired of people in the media saying why President Trump did or did not do something, because President Trump’s the only one that knows that.”
