Bear Caesar is finally free after years of being locked in a torture vest

Bears are powerful, incredibly intelligent creatures. Studies on American black bears have even shown they can count.

Just the thought of keeping them captive for our entertainment is heartbreaking — but forcing one to wear a torture vest is beyond cruel.

Hell on earth
Bear Caesar spent the first part of her life in a kind of hell on earth. She lived on a farm in China that harvested ingredients for traditional Chinese medicine.

She was cruelly forced to supply the farm with bile from her gallbladder. Her captors drained the fluid 24 hours a day and bound her in a restrictive metal vest. She was confined to a small room where she could barely move. But just when it seemed her life would never improve, kind-hearted animal advocates came to Caesar’s rescue — and changed everything.

Like thousands of other bears in China, Caesar grew up in what could only be described as hell on earth.

She was forced to live in a tiny, confined space and had what could only be described as a torture vest strapped onto her. Like a medieval device, the metal breastplate constricted her body, while a spike aimed at her neck prevented Caesar from trying to bite or remove it.

Even worse, Caesar had an open wound on her side. She was forced to provide bile from her gallbladder, which was used to make traditional Chinese medicine.

“It’s the worst imaginable bile farm torture,” Animals Asia, the group that saved Caesar, said about the vest. Caesar suffered immensely in these conditions, and it’s remarkable that she survived.

But amid the darkness, everything changed for Caesar in 2004 when she was one of several bears rescued by Animals Asia.

By then, she was exhausted, miserable, and seriously injured. Thanks to her rescuers, she was finally freed from the cruel vest and given the care and compassion she needed and deserved. She transformed into a strong, majestic bear with a beautiful, radiant coat. Like the Roman general she was named after, Caesar became a symbol of strength and dignity. Weighing around 300 kg, she had an impressive presence.

“Caesar’s scars have all but disappeared and today she is an astonishingly beautiful (and formidable) bear,” the organization wrote in 2016. After her rescue, her favorite activities included swimming, sunbathing, and digging — especially during the cooler autumn months.

“She has now spent a dozen happy years with Animals Asia in Chengdu, enjoying swims in the sunshine and indulging her natural digging instincts — particularly when the weather cools in the autumn,” the group shared. “Seeing a bear shake themselves like this is always an awe-inspiring moment — they’re such incredibly beautiful, powerful animals, and none more so than Caesar,” said Nic Field, director of the organization’s China bear and veterinary team. “To see her out in the sunshine a dozen years after her rescue, it’s hard to imagine what her life was like before.”

Although Caesar was saved, her story is a reminder of how much work still needs to be done to end animal cruelty. In China alone, an estimated 10,000 bears remain in captivity on bile farms. Hopefully, Caesar’s story serves as a wake-up call for animal lovers around the world to come together and help put an end to this practice.

“These metal jackets are now illegal and less common, but it’s likely there are still some out there,” Steve Jackson, head of communications for Animals Asia, told The Dodo in 2016.

Bear Caesar: a sad update
Caesar’s rescue was just one small victory against the bile industry, but it completely transformed her life. After years in darkness, she was finally able to swim, climb, and roam freely — making up for lost time.

Tragically, the harsh conditions she endured eventually caught up with her. She developed a highly aggressive tumor, a painful reminder of the long-term damage caused by repeated bile extractions — a reality many rescued bears face. Shortly after the tumor was discovered, Caesar passed away, leaving her caretakers at Animals Asia heartbroken.

Her story remains a powerful reminder of the suffering endured by bears like her, as well as the resilience and courage of animals who survive unimaginable cruelty.

torture

If Caesar’s life teaches us anything, it’s that we cannot stop until every bear is freed from the remaining bile farms in China and Vietnam — and that every chance to rescue even one bear matters. They need us more than we know. We cannot turn away.
